Heritage Works provides dance and drum programs during after school hours through our Heritage After School program. One of our more popular programs, Heritage After School includes: Drum Works, Dance Works and Heritage Arts.
Drum Works: Through vocalization, hand patterns, stick play, drumming, folklore and more, youth explore drum and musical traditions of different ethnic groups. The goal of this program is to promote positive youth development through skill development, cultural arts enrichment and coordination.
Dance Works: Through movement, rhythm, folklore and adornment, participating youth explore the movement and cultural traditions of the African Diaspora. In turn participants consider the practices and traditions that shape other people and their own lives with new eyes. The goal of this program is to promote youth development through understanding and physical recreation.
Heritage Arts: Through movement, music and folkore, youth explore cultural traditions of two groups or countries (e.g., Senegal and Cuba). The goal of Heritage Arts is to promote positive youth development through cultural intelligence, cross-cultural understanding, and physical recreation.
Although tailored to meet the needs of each site, programs in addition to weekly classes typically include a visiting artist workshop, a field trip and a culminating event for friends and families.
