Join Heritage Works for a weekend workshop featuring the movement and music traditions of Senegal. This workshop is held in conjunction with the University Musical Society's Cheikh Lo Concert.

A collaboration, UMS presents a lesson in traditional Senegalese dance. Lead by Senegalese artist Idy Ciss, who has performed before presidents of several African countries and appeared on national television in Senegal, the dance lesson will be accompanied by live drumming by two Dun players and two Djembe players. This event starts at 6:30 pm and is free and open to the public. No registration required.

Cheikh Lo Concert

Cheikh Lô is one of the great mavericks of African music. A superb singer and songwriter, as well as a distinctive guitarist and drummer, he has personalized and distilled a variety of influences from West and Central Africa to create a style that is uniquely his own. Lô dedicates both his life and music to Baye Fall, a Senegalese form of Islam and part of the larger Islamic brotherhood of Mouridism, which emerged at the end of the19th century from opposition to French colonialism. Join us for music, art making and Senegalese tea. Commonly known by the Wolof word Ataaya, this Senegalese tea tradition promotes conversation and community. The evening includes a performance by Assane Kouyate.

Special thanks to Cafe con Leche for extending their hours for this unique cultural experience. Their coffee bar and menu selections will be available for purchase throughout the evening.
